Very informative. It seems like I share a lot of the same opinions that you do concerning music in China. I’m Chinese, but I could never understand the whole take on music of my friends who live in China. I guess it means I’m too westernized. That doesn’t mean I’m better, but I do want the Chinese music industry to mature more.

Dear Ed

My British colleague and I just came across your blog and we’ve learnt a lot. We are working for a company in London trying to bridge the gap between Chinese and the UK music industries. It’s great to hear how a westerner think about the Chinese music industry. I’ll be your reader from now on. ^_^

Cheers

@ Melanie,

I think you will find a really positive response if you approach Chinese press directly with work on western artists. There is a real demand for good writers. It’s just a question of contacts.

A good place to start is here. Get in touch and see what happens.

Good luck…

Could you please give some advice on where/how one becomes a “music journalist” for Chinese mainland music? I grew up in the US and speak Chinese as well and listen to both English and Chinese music, and would love to combine my bilingual skills with my passion for all different types of music. Cheers~~

Hi Lua,

I have amended that bit.

I understand that a musician is not necessarily a good music writer, but are there no musicians who can also write?

This is interesting Ed. Need to correct that I haven’t sent the article to all my writers yet, just some of the review writers.

And I think to have a professional and serious attitude is very important in review writing. And if a musician cannot do a good review, it’s not his problem, he is not a music writer anyway.

Sorry Sean. I think there are enough Radiohead album reviews in existence already so I have not posted the full English one anywhere.
